Tips for writing a great about page

While most elements of your website will be pretty straightforward, the one page that people struggle most with is the about page.

You think it should be easy.  After all, it is about you.

We find it easy to talk about our clients but when it comes to ourselves we struggle to put pen to paper.

No matter how hard it is, it’s important to get it right.

Your about page is one of the most important pages on your website.  Not only does it share who you are to potential clients, but it is a great place to stand out from your competitors and show them why you are unique.

To make it easier for you, we have put together some tips on what to include.   This should ensure you have an about page that puts you head and shoulders above the competition.

1. Know your Audience.

You need to get into your audience’s mind.  What questions do they have about you?  Take some time to put yourself in their shoes and write with their perspective in mind.  Once you know who you are talking to, then use that knowledge to help you turn leads into sales.

2. It’s not all about the facts.

While facts are all well and good.  No one wants to hear or read them reeled off one after the other.  People want to get to know the real you.  They want to see a glimpse of the person they will be working with.

3. Values should be a priority.

We all have them and when we share the same values it creates a bond.  This is another step at building trust and starting a relationship with your audience.  Values matter to people.

4. Put yourself out there.

Logos are great for businesses, but now is the time for your clients to put a face to the name.  A really great headshot allows them to see you and know that they will be dealing with another human.

5. Your Professional journey.

People want to know that you will deliver the goods.  So, you need to tell them how you got here and what you did.  But, make it interesting – go back to point 2.  Tell your story, not your CV.

6. Highlight what you can do for them.

Now that they know who you are, they need to know how you can help them.  What services or products do you offer?  Be specific here and add links.  They want to know all the details.

7. Show them what you have created.

Here is where you can show off your work.  If you have a portfolio, add the link here.  They want to see examples of what you have achieved, so don’t be afraid to show off your work.

8. Build trust by showing what others think of you.

This goes hand in hand with the point above.  Whip out your testimonials, people love to hear what others have to say and it gives you credibility.

9. Don’t forget to add your contact details.

There is no point in writing a great about page, only for your potential client to get to the end and have no way to get in touch.  Yes, most pages have a contact page, but you don’t want them to get distracted.  It needs to be right there, so they don’t have to search for it.

10. It’s not all about you

Yes, we know it is about you.  But you want your audience to connect with you and find some common ground.  Think about them and how they will feel when they get to the end of your page.  Did you ramble on about everything you have achieved or were they able to get to know you and see themselves working with you?

Bonus:

Be Yourself This is probably the most important point of all.  You need to be yourself.  People can see through the facade.  So, if you don’t use the word ‘Aquiver’ (yes, we had to look it up too), then don’t start now.  Stick to what you know and that will build trust and show your audience your true self.
